Attitude and the Kiwi way:
New Zealanders have a reputation for being pretty easy going and this is generally true. However when it comes to work their reputation internationally is based on an intensely passionate work ethic and a ‘can do’ attitude that starts at the very top of any organisation and is evident at all levels. This ethos will have to be accepted and employed by anybody making the move to NZ and most definitely in Christchurch. Regrettably there are existing preconceptions about UK workers that will need to be reversed and those unable to meet the demands and expectations will be looking at a very short NZ experience. As effective as this Kiwi work ethic is there is no doubt that bringing in proven work practices from the UK & Ireland will only enhance the existing construction industry. It will require tolerance and acceptance from all involved but the result will be a highly skilled and motivated workforce which is going to be required to overcome the huge challenges ahead.
The negative realities:
For any body under any illusions that a decision to pursue construction opportunities in Christchurch is going to be easy, think again. You cannot lose sight of the underlying driver that this is a disaster recovery programme and there are many factors and limitations that will affect and determine the path of your pursuits and will also impact on you and potentially your family if you ultimately make the move. The following conditions are all current realities and may or may not impact on you but should be understood before you commit to relocating either temporarily or permanently. There is no point glossing over the negatives but for those who are able to work around what may be short term inconveniences, will have a potentially life changing experience.
• Frustration – The speed that things are currently happening is frustrating those most involved and affected. The reasons for the delays are many and varied but ultimately come back to the scale of the issues and the need to ensure a coordinated approach is employed. It is likely that this will be a factor for the entire project and this will affect not only the construction programme but life in general in and around Christchurch.
• Uncertainty – The traditional Kiwi attitude is to want to get stuck in but it is likely that decision making is going to be slow. Contract allocations may be delayed which could affect assignment start dates. Contingency planning and flexibility may be required.
• Living conditions – Large parts of Christchurch are still heavily affected by disruption to utilities and roads. Accommodation in certain areas will be minimal until repairs to homes and services are completed and access is restored. Many properties still only have access to port a loos located on the streets.
• Continuing aftershocks – It is common knowledge that after shocks have been regular and confidence in the area has taken a knock.
The Positive benefits:
For those who are able to overlook and accept the challenges, the rewards should make up for it. New Zealand offers a lifestyle probably second to none in the world. If you enjoy any form of outdoor activity the choices are fantastic and easily accessible from Christchurch. The South Island in general is one of the most spectacular places on the planet and the opportunities are there for both the brave and less courageous. If it’s the scenery that attracts migrants it is more likely the relaxed lifestyle that convinces people to stay.
• Lifestyle – Arguably one of the best places to spend any amount of time in, in the world.
• Relaxed immigration constraints – Potential opportunities not traditionally available
• Career opportunities – The opportunity to work on a project of this scale and diversity will enhance any CV and develop new skills
• Sport & leisure – Kiwis are sports fanatics and most people in NZ live there life around some form of sporting activity. If your chosen sport happens to be Rugby, Canterbury is the heartland of the NZ obsession. The 2011 Rugby World Cup is also an added bonus
• Social contribution – This disaster has had a major impact on the lives of many Cantabrians and being involved with this will have a massive impact on their lives.
• Legacy contribution – It’s not very often an opportunity to rebuild an entire city is available. Contributions at every level will be a seen as a visible and hopefully sustainable city takes a fresh new direction and as much of the heritage is retained.
• Personal development – There is nothing quite like leaving the comfort zone to provide life changing growth opportunities and expand your sense of the world.
